Mentoring Introduction PDF Print E-mail

What is Mentoring?

Business mentoring in an education context is when people from business act as mentors to young people.  The original, and still most common form of business mentoring, is face-to-face with one-to-one meetings taking place at a school.

E-mentoring has developed in the UK in the past five years as a means of pairing business people with school students over a wider geographical area. It involves exchanges of emails or dialogues via a secure website.

‘Blended mentoring’ is a term applied to schemes which include face-to-face contact between mentors and mentees combined with email and telephone contact.

Teachers and lecturers can also be mentored by businesses to support specific courses they are delivering or for other aspects of their own development.

Internally a number of schools used peer mentoring as a means of older students supporting younger ones within the schools.

Mentoring within the Diplomas

Although at the early stages in most consortia, mentoring support for the Diplomas can be extremely positive, as employers can be asked to support a particular unit or aspect of Diploma work. This means that it is highly focused both for the employer and for the student or students, and is limited to a block of time, possibly half a term.

IEBE Support for Mentoring

As part of the work with DCSF, IEBE has established a mentoring group to look at a number of issues around mentoring to help support practitioners.
